Teams that work - the translator's recommendation

29/10/2024

In November 2020, Pallas Athéné Publishers contacted me with an unexpected but all the more delightful request to translate Scott Tannenbaum and Eduardo Salas' "Teams that work", which was already a great success abroad, from English into Hungarian. There have been countless books and articles on the importance of teamwork, but few have dealt with the subject as comprehensively and yet in such an easy-to-understand way as this book, the Hungarian version of which was eventually titled "Sikeres csapatok". The book, which was finally published in 2021 and voted by readers in 2022 as the most popular management book in the publisher's 5-year history is not only for professionals or managers, but for all everyday people who want to learn more about how effective teams work and how to make them successful.

What makes this book unique is that the authors share decades of research and experience. Tannenbaum and Salas are acknowledged experts in the field of team dynamics, and their work has proven its practical utility in a wide range of industries, including the military, healthcare, and business. But "Teams that work" is not just a list of academic findings, it is a step-by-step guide that walks readers through the tools and techniques needed to develop effective teamwork.

But why should you pick up this book as well?

1. Easy to understand and practical: One of the greatest strengths of "Teams that work" is that it translates complex psychological and leadership theories into simple, everyday language. The authors provide concrete examples and case studies that make it easy for the reader to see the challenges and opportunities of team dynamics in their own lives, whether it's in work, sport or even family teams.

2. Supporting personal development: We can improve our performance and contribution in almost every area of teamwork, whether as part of a project team at work or as a volunteer in a community organisation. The book helps you understand how to be a more effective team member and how you can contribute to the success of a team without being in a formal leadership role.

3. Applicable to everyday life: Effective communication, building trust, and conflict management are all skills that are key in everyday life. Tannenbaum and Salas' book also provides useful tips for developing these skills, which anyone can apply to different areas of their life.

4. Interesting and inspiring book to read: The authors' style is direct and inspiring, and reading the book not only teaches you something, but also motivates you to put the knowledge you've gained into practice. The book is full of real-life examples, success stories and sometimes even humour, which makes it easy to read and absorb what you have learned.

All in all, Scott Tannenbaum and Eduardo Salas' book "Teams that work" is a basic work worth reading for anyone interested in better understanding the essence and effectiveness of teamwork. The book is not just for professionals, but for anyone who works in a team or simply wants to improve their own skills in working together. Its easy-to-understand language and practical advice will be a valuable guide for all readers on the path to successful teamwork. If you'd like a copy of the Hungarian version, you can get one from Pallas Athéné Publishers, Libri or Líra Books. I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed the process of translation. Have a good read!
