The April theory: Why is it more effective to set goals in spring than in January?
Traditional New Year's resolutions are often made in January, but according to the "April Theory", spring - especially April - is a more ideal time for self-improvement and goal-setting. This approach is not just a TikTok trend, but is based on psychology and biology and is gaining ground in the coaching world.
The origin of the April theory
The April theory has become popular on social media, particularly on TikTok, but its effectiveness is also supported by experts. According to Harvard University psychologist Dr Mayron Piccolo, spring, the renewal of nature and longer days have a positive effect on our mood and motivation. Psychologist Dr. La Keita Carter adds that increased sunlight stimulates serotonin production, which improves our mood and energy levels.
Why is it more effective to set goals in April?
Biological and psychological benefits: The natural light and warmer weather encourage physical activity and stronger social relationships, which positively impacts our mental health.
Less pressure, more self-reflection: In January we often have unrealistic expectations of ourselves, while in April we have the experience of the first quarter of the year to help us set realistic goals and self-reflect.
Aligning with natural rhythms: spring is a time of renewal, which encourages change and new beginnings. This natural cycle supports setting and achieving long-term goals.
Applying April Theory in coaching
In coaching, April Theory can help our clients set more realistic and sustainable goals. The following strategies can be useful in the spring:
Progress in small steps: instead of setting overly ambitious goals, it is worth setting smaller, more achievable goals that give a sense of achievement and motivate you to keep going.
Establishing a flexible routine: instead of a rigid daily routine, it is worth establishing a routine that adapts to individual needs and changing circumstances.
Seasonal goals: instead of annual goals, it is worth setting quarterly or seasonal goals that are more in line with natural rhythms and easier to track.
Why is this good for you?
The April Theory encourages us to set goals in line with natural cycles, harnessing the renewed energy of spring. In coaching, this approach can help our clients set more realistic, sustainable and motivating goals that can make a real difference in their lives.
If you feel that the resolutions you made at the beginning of the year didn't deliver the results you wanted, don't despair! April is the perfect time to re-evaluate your goals and start working towards them with renewed vigour.
